Message for the 5th Roundtable Meeting (RT5) on Sustainable Palm Oil and Conference of the Parties 10 (COP 10) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD)
The corporate forum and public symposium on “Palm Oil and CSR” were jointly organized by two notable Japanese Non-Profitable Organizations, namely Global Environmental Forum and ZERI JAPAN, at the Tokyo International Forum on October 10th, 2007.
At this event, presentations were made on the current situation of oil palm plantations, environment and social impact of palm oil production, the initiatives and mechanisms of the RSPO to verify and trace sustainable palm oil, and challenges of the Japanese business enterprises for the conservation of Borneo forests. Based on these presentations, we discussed environmental and social impacts of palm oil production and approaches to mitigate them. We further argued about sustainable palm oil production, the way of our consumption, and corporation in order to maintain biodiversity of production area. In the discussion, it was noted that it would be required to control total demand considering the rapid growth of demand for bio-fuel in addition to the original demand for food.
Through discussions, we re-acknowledged the necessity of CSR procurement that will achieve sustainable sourcing and conservation of biodiversity. What is sought is the ability and willingness of the consumers to select and purchase products, which have been produced with sustainable raw materials with thoughtful considerations for biodiversity, local communities, indigenous peoples, smallholders, workers and women, in order to deal with ongoing global forest reduction and degradation, and to realize social justice. Therefore, it is significant to establish framework for information exchange and corporation between suppliers and consumers. For instance, we believe that certification system of sustainable palm oil production or eco-labeling could be beneficial methods to achieve them.
We, as business enterprises, civil societies, or citizens, are determined to take possible actions to promote production and consumption of sustainable materials which even extend considerations for biodiversity. We convey this message to the 5th Roundtable Meeting (RT5) on Sustainable Palm Oil and Conference of the Parties 10 (COP 10) to the CBD held in Nagoya in 2008.
